Japanese Cuisine are traditional food dishes that are usually historically influenced over time, and primarily consist of common foods consumed globally due to the popularity of the taste. These foods are usually well known, and some that you may have heard of already include the well favoured sushi, sashimi and our overall favourite, ramen. In this article, we will be taking a closer look at Japanese cuisine, and dishes that you possibly have not heard of before.


Kushikatsu (串カツ)

Kushikatsu is a Japanese Cuisine which is battered, deep-fried, and consists primarily of meat on a skewer, which also sometimes includes vegetables. The main ingredients of this dish include chicken, pork, seafood and seasonal vegetables.

The History of Kushikatsu

Kushikatsu was founded at Daruma restaurant, where it was established in 1929 after starting off as a small canteen. Over time, it became a regular cuisine in Osaka, and eventually went to spread all over Japan as a popular food dish. The proprietress of the all famous Daruma began serving this delicious dish for the local laborers in Osaka. It became popular during the war era as a delicious, cheap food that people could enjoy.

A taste of Osaka

This dish has a crispy, deep-fried batter, as seen in the photo above. Other than the batter, this dish has a light and fluffy taste to it, so it is not too heavy on your stomach, and would make for a perfect snack. The vegetables add that healthiness that you are looking for in a delicious dish, whilst the meat compliments it. Best be on the lookout for this dish, you really should try it!

Onigiri, which comes from the word “to form/mould”, is a well favored dish in Japan for its simplicity. It is a rice ball shaped into a triangular or cylindrical shape, as well as being wrapped with seafood. Some people would think that this dish is sushi, but it is not.

The History of Onigiri

Onigiri has a history that goes far back in the past. During 794-1185, balls of rice were eaten on picnics and while traveling throughout Japan. Onigiri were originally wrapped in dried bamboo sheaths for handling while traveling, and the custom of covering them in dried seaweed started around the mid-1800s, which has now become the normal way of eating them.

A Simple Snack

Onigiri has a taste as simple as its name, as of course, it only tastes of seaweed and plain rice, which makes it a perfect healthy snack in which you can eat as many as you like. In short, it is the perfect little snack when visiting Japan, so dig in!

Sukiyaki is a delicious meal that is well known throughout Japan for its flavors, as it consists of a lot of ingredients, such as thin slices of beef that are browned in oil, followed by tofu, shiitake mushrooms, onions, shirataki and vegetables. This might become a personal favorite of yours, due to all of its wonderful flavors!

A Short History

During 1603–1868, farmers used suki to serve up food such as fish and tofu. However, sukiyaki became a traditional Japanese dish during the Meiji era. Yokohama opened the first ever sukiyaki restaurant in 1862, which started its growth towards being a delicious dish amongst Japanese people. In 1872, the Emperor helped popularize this dish by eating meat, contributing towards its popularity.

A Spoonful of Flavor

Of course, as mentioned, this dish not only carries an intriguing history but lots of interesting flavors, as the mix of thin slices of beef, tofu, shiitake mushrooms, onions, shirataki and vegetables all contribute to a warm and comforting dish.
